Over recent years the popularity of Password Manager programs have risen. In theory, a Password Manager is great for protecting your online security and privacy. A password manager is a software application designed to store and manage your online credentials. These applications will store your passwords within an encrypted database. Upon command a Password manager will even auto-populate the ID and Password fields for you when logging into a website.

When you log onto your device you can initiate or open your preferred Password Manager by typing in the “master password.” The “master password” is supposed to be known to you and only you. It shouldn’t be written down anywhere whether in a scrap book or saved somewhere on your device(s).

Sounds like Password Managers are a highly secured and safe way to protect your online identity and privacy, right? Well, kind of. They are definitely far more safe and secure than storing passwords in your favorite browser (if you are still doing this, please stop doing so immediately).

But what if your devices becomes infected with malware? Keyloggers are a type of malware that can render a Password Manager to be completely useless and vulnerable. Because if your master password is captured, then everything within your Password Manager is known. It can then be exposed and used by the hacker. Once the hacker has your data, it can be sold or given away for free.
