Answer Engine Optimization FAQ
What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so a search engine or AI assistant returns your business as the direct answer to a question. It targets featured snippets, People Also Ask results, voice responses, and single-source AI replies.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO works to rank a page within a list of results. AEO works to have that page selected as the single answer displayed above or instead of the list. AEO depends on SEO, because answer surfaces almost always draw from pages already ranking in the top ten for the query.
How is AEO different from GEO?
Answer Engine Optimization targets the one direct answer. Generative Engine Optimization targets inclusion as one of several cited sources inside a synthesized AI answer. They share some inputs, including entity clarity and schema, but the objectives and the measurement methods differ.
Is AEO the same as optimizing for ChatGPT?
Partly. When a question has one clear answer, AI platforms often draw from a single source, and that behavior responds to AEO work. When a question requires synthesis across several sources, the relevant discipline is Generative Engine Optimization.
How long does AEO take to work?
Plan on six months. Individual answer surfaces sometimes move sooner, particularly on queries where the page already ranks in the top ten, but early wins are not the same as durable results. Snippet ownership has to be held through competitor responses and layout changes, and the entity work underneath it accumulates over months rather than weeks. That is why AI Search Ready™ runs on a six-month initial term. A shorter commitment would show activity without proving anything.
How do you measure AEO results?
By direct verification. We track which target queries return your business in the featured snippet, People Also Ask, and single-source AI answers, and report the changes month over month. You can confirm any individual result yourself by running the query.
Does schema markup alone win featured snippets?
No. Schema removes ambiguity about which text on a page is the answer, but it does not override relevance or authority. FAQPage markup in particular no longer produces any rich result in Google, following a deprecation in May 2026, so it should be deployed for machine clarity rather than sold as a route to a larger listing. Any provider presenting schema deployment as sufficient for snippet ownership is overstating what it does.
Can I lose a featured snippet after winning it?
Yes. Snippet ownership changes when competitors publish stronger answers and when Google adjusts result layouts. Recurring verification is part of the work rather than an optional add-on.
Do I need a website redesign for AEO?
Usually not. Most AEO work involves restructuring existing content, adding question-led headings, and deploying schema. A redesign becomes relevant when the underlying technical foundation cannot support the work.
Is AEO worth it for a B2B business with low search volume?
Often yes, and sometimes more so than for high-volume consumer categories. Low-volume B2B queries tend to be high-intent, and answer surfaces on those queries face less competition. A small number of owned answers can represent a meaningful share of the buyers who exist.
Do you offer AEO as a standalone service?
No. AEO work is delivered within AI Search Ready™ at $697 per month or the SEO/GEO Content Engine at $497 per month. Extraction work performed without addressing the technical and entity foundations beneath it does not hold, and selling it separately would produce results we could not defend.
What does the free audit include?
A written diagnostic of which answer surfaces you currently hold, how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini describe your business, and which competitors appear in the answers where you do not. No purchase is required.
